I create harmonious, tranquil paintings of the world around us from everyday objects to semi abstract landscapes.
It is important to me to capture something elusive on canvas - a feeling, a memory, a fleeting impression, perhaps inspired by the depth of colour in a flower or the way sunlight spills over a grass verge, or how the casual arrangements of objects can transport one back to another time and place.
PAINTING IS A WAY OF DOCUMENTING LIFE
I paint predominantly in acrylic and start with many layers of paint, playing with different colours, perhaps also including random marks made using stencils or collage, to form a visually pleasing, textured base. Much of this base will be covered over, but some will form the background to my main subject.
Something about this subject will have inspired me to paint and I spend some time looking and considering how best to capture the essence of that inspiration.
Building my painting up to the point where I feel I have captured what I want is often a slow and tentative process at first, involving many layers, each adding to and refining the previous one. However as the layers grow and I get closer to what I am trying to portray, my approach becomes more determined and deliberate.
